Update history

Thu, Aug 6

Our local team have been closely monitoring the section and unfortunately the water levels have still not recovered. Our efforts to recover water levels are being impacted by a limit on the volume of water we can abstract from the River Idle. This means that when the river drops below a prescribed level our abstraction must be reduced under the terms of our Abstraction Licence with the Environment Agency. Our local team will continue to closely monitor water levels throughout this section, and we expect this to be a temporary measure as river levels fluctuate around the level at which our ability to abstract is impacted. The canal will reopen as soon as conditions have recovered sufficiently for navigation to resume safely. We will provide a further update on Monday 10th August on the progress of the recovery and will reopen the canal at the earliest opportunity

Wed, Aug 5

Following the recent reopening of this section, Between Gringley Lock and Shaw Lock has had to close due to Water levels on this section of the canal falling to a level where we need to temporarily suspend navigation. The local team will be ashing up the lock gates to allow water levels to recover and the canal to replenish. Taking this precaution now helps protect the navigation, minimise the risk of further water loss, and ensure the canal remains safe for all users. Our local team will continue to closely monitor water levels throughout this section, and we expect this to be a temporary measure. The canal will reopen as soon as conditions have recovered sufficiently for navigation to resume safely. We will provide a further update on Thursday 6th August on the progress of the recovery and will reopen the canal at the earliest opportunity.

Conditions can change. Check local signage and the latest official notice before travelling.
