PublishedThird‑party contractors will be undertaking demolition works on the offside between Asylum Bridge and Western Road Bridge. To facilitate the works, a pontoon will be installed within the canal, which will partially restrict the channel width. The canal will remain open throughout the works. Signs will be installed on site to warn approaching boaters. Please proceed with caution when navigating through this section and follow all on‑site signage and instructions.
Lock 82 Benham Lock
PublishedCadley Lock 54 to Crofton Top Lock 55
PublishedFurther to the notice below, please be advised that due to prolonged dry weather and ongoing challenges with water resources, reservoir holdings supplying the Kennet & Avon Canal are lower than would normally be expected for this time of year. This has reduced the amount of water available to support navigation across the network. To help conserve water resources for as long as possible, we are introducing restricted operating hours at the Crofton flight (Locks 54 Cadley, Lock 55 Crofton top Lock) from Friday 31st July 2026. Opening hours will be from 10am until 2pm each day. The purpose of this measure is to reduce water demand and allow water levels to recover, helping to ensure there is sufficient water available for navigation during daytime operating hours. We hope these temporary restrictions will support continued cruising throughout the summer period. The situation is being monitored closely and reviewed regularly. Whilst we hope these measures will be sufficient, further restrictions may be required if water resources do not improve. We will continue to keep customers updated as conditions develop.
Bridge 98A, Waterwitch Footbridge
PublishedBridge 98A, Waterwitch Footbridge on the Lancaster Canal, remains closed to all users due to a partial collapse of the walkway. Our teams are continuing to work with specialist contractors and third-party landowners to obtain the necessary permissions. Once these are in place, we will be able to plan a date for the repair works to take place. Whilst the canal will remain open to navigation, we ask all customers to approach the area with caution and listen to any advice given on site. A further update will be provided on or before Thursday 13 August.

PublishedNear Horton Road Bridge - Bridge 134
PublishedWe would like to advise our customers that contractor Balfour Beatty working on behalf of National Grid will be working approximately 300 metres south of bridge 134 installing a drainage headwall on the offside of the canal. The headwall is part of the surface water drainage system taking water from the National Grid site nearby into the canal. Please observe signs and approach with caution, follow any instructions from the contractor. These works are not on the towpath side and the navigation will remain fully open. You are welcome to contact us at [enquiries.walessouthwest@canalrivertrust.org.uk](mailto:enquiries.walessouthwest@canalrivertrust.org.uk) or 03030 404040 if you would like to discuss this information with a member of our Customer Service Team.

Lock 7 Footbridge
PublishedLock 7 footbridge on the Rufford Branch of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal remains closed to all users due to a deterioration to the footbridge making it unsafe to use. The offside paddle at Lock 7 cannot be operated by wide beam vessels, therefore, Lock 7 is restricted to narrowboats only. Our team has been delayed attending site due to high priority works we are facing at the moment across the network and will attend site as soon as a workboat is available which is required to facilitate the repairs. As soon as the workboat becomes available our team will attend and complete the repairs. A further update will be provided on or before Monday, 24 August.

PublishedAs part of our continued commitment to the Better Boating Plan, we will be carrying out essential underwater repair works at Lemonroyd Lock on Wednesday, 12th August, to improve the reliability and performance of the lock gates. Specialist commercial divers will be undertaking repairs beneath the water, helping to significantly reduce water leakage through the gates and improve the long-term operation of the lock. PublishedLock 33 is being closed due to drought conditions, whilst this is in place we will be completely a 2027 stoppage to change both top and bottom lock gates and stop plank groves. There will be review points throughout the works if conditions change and they canal is to re-open. this currently looks like the following • Works at Lock 33 are expected to commence during the week commencing 17th August. • Replacement of the top gates is expected to be completed during the week commencing 31st August. • At that point, the project team will review progress on site, alongside prevailing water levels, weather conditions and any rainfall received across the catchment, to determine whether any navigation passage opportunity can be safely provided. • Following repositioning of the crane boat, works will begin on the bottom gates, with completion currently anticipated by 25 September. • This will be followed by approximately four days of demobilisation and making the site safe. • Subject to conditions and successful completion of the works, a planned navigation passage window is currently expected between 2 and 4 October. As with all works taking place during the current drought conditions, the programme will be kept under constant review. We are holding regular internal meetings to monitor progress, water resource conditions and navigation impacts, and we will continue to assess opportunities to minimise disruption wherever possible. We wanted to provide this update as early as possible given the interest many of you have shown in the planned works and the feedback you previously shared. Your comments played an important role in helping us understand the potential business impacts of a future planned closure, and we are grateful for the constructive engagement we have received throughout. We will continue to keep you informed as the works progress and will issue further updates should any aspect of the programme change.
